Everyone was invited – not just Protestant Christians. Bremen was counting 100,000 fulltime visitors to join in a great festival of faith. Discussions about political issues and controversial forums about the future of our world took place. This huge event was diverse and international, thoughtful and joyful!
2009 is a special year. The outbreak of World War 2 will be 70 years behind us. The German Federal Republic – like the Kirchentag itself – will be 60 years old, and it will be 20 years since the Fall of the Berlin Wall. That's why it is necessary to engage with bold questions about freedom and responsibility.
"A mixture of a University summer school, a Bible convention, Taizé, a synod meeting, the Edinburgh Festival, a brass band festival for 500 bands, an Ideal Homes exhibition and a cup final – all rolled into one and all went on at the same time …" That’s how one participant from Great Britain has described the “Kirchentag”, a phenomenon that is hard to define or compare with anything else. It is a unique event and a tremendous experience.
